Founded in 1920, the Honigmond Restaurant in Berlin’s Borsigstrasse enjoys a lively history. During the days of the German Democratic Republic (former East Germany) a doorman had to be engaged to control the throng of opposition leaders who wanted to enter. Popular culture figures of the time, Wolf Biermann and Nina Hagen, also met, dined, and celebrated here . . . and spoke out just a bit too much for the Stasi (the East German State Security Police). In 1987 the restaurant was closed, without comment, due to ‘over-realisation of its service authorisation’. In 1995 the Honigmond re-opened its doors and since then has been delighting its guests with a cozy atmosphere and classic, traditional cuisine. Specialties of the house are ‘Königsberger Klopse’ (a meatball-in-caper-sauce dish from old East Prussia), Swiss cheese fondue, and fanciful salad creations. Those who prefer something more substantial will enjoy beef goulash with Bohemian dumplings or brisket of beef in horseradish sauce. Regardless of which delicacies the guests choose, they value the high quality of the offerings and the attractive prices. he Honigmond is furnished with simple wooden tables and chairs in coffeehouse style. Candles make for a warm light, which is reflected in a huge wall mirror, and in the rear dining room an old piano stands ready for whoever can and wants to give it a try. In short, a wonderful place, full of atmosphere, in which to take a moment and enjoy life! |
